“The World Humanitarian Summit, to be held in Istanbul in May, will be another opportunity to promote international solidarity. It will help to mobilize assistance to the most vulnerable populations of this region and the rest of the world”.

With these words the Secretary-General began the second leg of his “Mission for Humanity”. First he flew to Burkina Faso, where he spoke with President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré and visited the Nutrition Rehabilitation Unit for Children at the Schipra Hospital, in Ouagadougu. He praised the hard-won gains to consolidate democracy and development in the country and he welcomed the efforts of local authorities to reduce malnutrition. Click here to see major highlights!

In Mauritania, he highlighted the “triple peril” of environmental degradation, poverty and insecurity facing the Sahel, stressing that investing in youth could be a powerful force for progress against violent extremism. Meeting the President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, he welcomed the country’s laws to penalize slavery and address torture. Click here to see major highlights!

When visiting the Sahrawi refugees in Algeria he was deeply saddened and moved by the anger of people “who for more than forty years have lived in the harshest conditions and who feel their plight and their cause have been forgotten by the world”.  After meeting with refugees and youth representatives at Smara camp, he met with the Polisario Front’s Secretary-General Mohamed Abdelaziz.
