UNSG shining a light on local response efforts

On 31 January 2016 the United Nations’ Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon visited the drought-stricken region of Oromia, Ethiopia. Together with the Deputy Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Demeke Mekonnen, and Ertharin Cousin, the Executive Director of the UN World Food Programme, he witnessed first-hand efforts to battle the effects of one of the most powerful El Niño events in recorded history.

By shining a light on the realities on the ground, his aim is to reach those furthest behind first, inspiring the world to bring humanity back to the centre of global decision making. The World Humanitarian Summit, set to take place in Istanbul on 23 – 24 May 2016, will be a historic opportunity for global leaders to put people at the heart of humanitarian action, marking a turning point in the way the world addresses the global challenges facing our common humanity.
